Q&A with Collette
What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?
My characters come first. I make an effort to really get to know them before and during the writing process. They often take their stories in directions I didn’t anticipate and the romance is better for it.
What is your writing process like? Are you more of a plotter or a pantser?
I’m a linear pantser. I tried plotting and failed dismally. After the first 2-3 chapters, they characters rebelled and did want they darn well wanted.
Have pets ever gotten in the way of your writing?
Actually, my chiweenie, Ayva, is usually with me when I write. I wrote five or six books with her on my lap when she was a tiny puppy. When she got too big, I put a bed beneath my desk. I don’t write at my desk much anymore, so she sits beside me on the sofa.
If you had to describe yourself in just three words, what would those be?
Funny, organized, creative.
